The Basics of Wound Care / Preventing Proud Flesh

Regardless of the cause, all wounds must be cleaned and kept free of dirt and debris. Daily washing with Equiderma Neem Shampoo, or in a pinch, antibacterial soap, along with application of Equiderma Calendula Wound Ointment, will guarantee a successful outcome for your horse.
Equiderma Calendula Wound Ointment has shown remarkable results in the treatment of horse wounds and burns and the prevention of “proud flesh.” Wounds on horses can be difficult and slow to heal, especially below the knee or hock, primarily because the legs are comprised of bone, tendons and ligaments, lacking underlying muscle. The skin is relatively thin and the tight surface makes suturing difficult. Even after wounds are stitched, they often break open due to excessive tension and motion.
Injuries in this part of the anatomy tend to produce excessive granulation tissue, otherwise known as "proud flesh." Proud flesh is a protrusion from the skin surface and is accompanied by inflammation. It can significantly impact the horse's performance ability and appearance. Many potions have been developed to eat away granulation tissue, but they have generally been caustic substances. Caustic substances destroy healthy tissue along with the exuberant granulation tissue. This approach is painful. The caustic substances may cause further damage to the wound and inhibit healing.
Home remedies suggest a paste of sugar and iodine as a cover up, or meat tenderizer, but they are known to be ineffective. Left untreated this condition can result in a veterinarian having to cut away or cauterize the excess tissue, then tightly wrap the wound to immobilize it, in hopes that the proud flesh does not grow back. It is a sad fact that in most cases, this approach fails.

TREATMENT

Equiderma Calendula Wound Ointment promotes healing and stops the production of proud flesh. With proper use it will accomplish the following:
  • Aid in the treatment and healing of superficial and infected wounds and burns in horses and other animals.
  • Guard against bacterial and fungal conditions typical of stable and outdoor environments.
  • Prevent the creation of proud flesh if used at the onset of a wound.
  • Repels/blocks insects. You will not need to use pesticides to keep insects out of the wound. Calendula and Neem are superstars in the herbal world for healing and our ingredients create a protective seal over the wound site.

Calendula has been proven to speed the healing of burns, bruises, and cuts, and the infections they cause. Studies show that calendula speeds healing by increasing blood flow to the injury, and helping the body produce collagen proteins used to heal skin and connective tissue.

Equiderma Products are Great!!!

Equiderma products are great! I volunteer at a rescue and we use a lot of their products. I have recently started using them on a draft horse with CPL. it is easily yet but it seems to be getting smaller. Some of the CPL sites have recommended zinc oxide for horses with CPL. I figured what have I got to lose. I also use it for one of our drafts with pastern dermatitis. The people at Equiderma are kind and helpful. Their company cares. My review will say Maggie but she’s the horse. Maggie is very appreciative of having the Equiderma products.
