Let’s be honest: most horse owners cringe at the thought of sheath cleaning. It’s awkward. It’s messy. It’s easy to put off. But putting it off isn’t harmless — it’s painful for the horse.

Smegma builds up, hardens, forms “beans” at the tip of the penis, and creates pressure, irritation, and discomfort. Horses adjust how they stand, how they urinate, how they move — and owners often never realize the cause. The same goes for mares’ genital areas and udders: buildup leads to inflammation, swelling, and problems that are easy to miss until they’re serious.

I didn’t create Equiderma Sheath Cleanser to fill a product gap or chase another category. I made it because I kept seeing horses in real pain from something preventable — something people avoided because it made them uncomfortable.

When you work closely with horses, “gross” stops being a barrier. You see anatomy. You see comfort. You see what happens when basic care is skipped because it feels awkward. This isn’t cosmetic. This is health. This is dignity. And it deserves the same attention as any other part of horse care.

That’s why the formula is gentle, oil-based, and sulfate-free — it softens and releases buildup without stinging, burning, or irritating already sensitive tissue. It rinses clean, leaves no residue, and works the first time — even on fractious or uncomfortable horses where you may only get one shot.

We also made education part of the product. That’s why we filmed a clear, straightforward sheath-cleaning tutorial and shared it publicly — because understanding what’s happening removes the hesitation.

So roll up your sleeves. This isn’t glamorous. But it’s responsible. Do something slightly uncomfortable for a horse who can’t ask for it themselves. When you’re done, wash your hands, look in the mirror, and know you showed up where it mattered.

More Than Hygiene – A Health Perspective Routine sheath, genital, and under-tail care prevents hardened buildup, reduces irritation and inflammation, and catches problems early. It also makes future cleanings easier and less stressful — tissue stays healthier when cared for consistently.

Harsh detergents and stripping agents dry and irritate delicate skin, making things worse. Equiderma Sheath Cleanser breaks down smegma gently, rinses clean, and leaves the area calm — not inflamed.

This is normal, responsible horse ownership. When done with the right knowledge and the right product, it becomes simple preventive care that supports comfort, function, and long-term health.

Equiderma Products are Great!!!

Equiderma products are great! I volunteer at a rescue and we use a lot of their products. I have recently started using them on a draft horse with CPL. it is easily yet but it seems to be getting smaller. Some of the CPL sites have recommended zinc oxide for horses with CPL. I figured what have I got to lose. I also use it for one of our drafts with pastern dermatitis. The people at Equiderma are kind and helpful. Their company cares. My review will say Maggie but she’s the horse. Maggie is very appreciative of having the Equiderma products.

We are lifelong Equiderma fans!

We use both the horse and dog products from Equiderma and love them both equally. My chocolate lab has allergies and using the barn dog shampoo has cleared up all his skin issues, we couldn't survive without it. On top of amazing products, the customer service is exceptional. We are lifelong fans of Equiderma.
