Winter Rain Rot (Dermatophilus Congolensis)

Remove rot and begin regrowing your horse's hair within 48 hours

The organism dermatophilus congolensis causes rain rot in horses. Dermatophilus congolensis is not a fungus. It is an actinomycete, which behaves like both bacteria and fungi. These organisms can live in dormancy on the skin for some time, and become active with moisture, high humidity, and warm temperatures. During winter it can quickly develop when blanketing is prevalent. The blanket warms your horse and also creates a warm, cozy environment for dermatophiles. Both conditions are the perfect environment to grow a flourishing garden of rain rot.

Zoospores germinate to produce barbed, threadlike tentacles, which penetrate the living skin and spread in all directions. The result is an acute inflammatory reaction as in these photos.

Treatment for Cold Weather Rain Rot

  1. For the first treatment, shake your bottle of Equiderma Skin Lotion and apply it to all affected areas. Leave it on overnight and let it do its job. It will kill all bacteria present and soften any scabs, so removal will be easy.

  2. After 24 hours, prepare a bucket of hot water and add a small amount of Equiderma Neem Shampoo. Soak a wash cloth in the prepared bucket and wring it out until it is semi dry. Not dripping. Gently rub the area in a circular motion as you would if you were currying your horse. Your goal is to remove all scabs, dead tissue and hair. The scabs will come away easily.

  3. After removal of all hair and dead tissue, remove shampoo by using the same curry method with clean water and your cloth wrung out as dry as possible. Re-apply Equiderma Skin Lotion.

  4. Rinse shampoo well and re-apply Equiderma Skin Lotion.

  5. Carefully observe skin and look for any new hair growth. You should see new growth within 24 to 48 hours. When hair growth starts treatment is finished. This is your indicator the dermatophytes are gone and the hair follicle has been restored to good health.

Equiderma Before & After Photos

Equiderma Treatment F.A.Q.

Q: What are the signs of winter rain rot?

A: An infected horse will have bumps along the back and croup. When pulled, the hair will easily come free leaving an infected, hairless spot of skin. The problem is easily diagnosed this way, but a definitive diagnosis can be made only from taking a culture and having it tested.

Q: How did my horse get rain rot?

A: The natural habitat of dermatophilus congolensis is unknown, although it is probably a saprophyte in the soil. It is believed to be spread by direct contact between horses, through contaminated environments, or biting insects.

Customer Testimonials

Don't just take our word for it - here's what some of our customers have to say:

In a couple of days the rain rot areas were gone In a couple of days the rain rot areas were gone

When we rescued Tika last year, she came covered in rain rot, cannon crud and had a large tumor on the inside of her ear. Scratches on her back legs appeared a month after we had her home. I tried everything - and nothing was getting rid of her skin issues - until someone passed along Equiderma. The blue lotion covered my whiteboard horse and in a couple of days the rain rot areas were gone, cannon crud erased and even (and this is amazing!) the tumor in her ear was shrinking! Scratches are gone too! We are so impressed with this product and how it has treated a grey's sensitive skin. It smells wonderful going on and she seems to be healthier and ready to get to work.

It has worked amazingly! It has worked amazingly!

My OTTB always had extreme issues with rain rot.... I was not looking forward to another summer in South Florida. A vet recommended Equiderma after trying just about everything else. It has worked amazingly! Using both the shampoo and lotion has caused his coat and skin to be the healthiest and shiniest it has ever been! He is the only pasture horse that has gone all summer without an issue and gleams in the sun!

Again with perfect skin and fur after a bad case of rain rot Again with perfect skin and fur after a bad case of rain rot

Tried numerous products until I stumbled across the Equiderma skin lotion. I combined it with an exfoliating shampoo and rain rot and scratches are completely gone. I also love, love the fly spray.

Love these two products...the shampoo and skin lotion are helping me battle my chestnut gelding's rampant skin issues this year in Florida. We have had so much rain that his body cannot keep up! The combination of these two products has made him significantly more comfortable.

So much happier and calm So much happier and calm

I used the shampoo and the skin lotion with amazing results. My horse had very bad rain rot and was so itchy she was chewing on herself after the hurricane. One use of the shampoo and a couple uses of the lotion on her legs and you could see the improvement that first week. It is now improved and she is so much happier and calm. Thank you.

Every year Sweetie has painful scabs caused by rain rot. I have tried lots of sireentent treatments, cleaned and disinfected my brushes and it never ever went totally away. I used your lotion twice and no scabs! After a couple months no sign of it returning! Awesome product. I plan on purchasing your whole line.

I had no idea what to do to make her better I had no idea what to do to make her better

When I picked up my mare Rose from the kill pen she was with foal, skin and bones, covered with rain rot and her beautiful white legs were bloody, scabby open sores. I had no idea what to do to make her better. Luckily Equiderma did, within a few weeks we were blessed with a beautiful healthy colt and Rose was on her way to healing thanks to Bethany and her products.

So happy with these products! So happy with these products!

Every spring my horse Winston, who is now 30, gets a really bad case of rain rot. Because of his age, I have not been able to get rid of it completely each year. These products have eradicated for the first time in many years. He also had a mild case of scratches recently and after two applications of the lotion, it has also healed. Hair is growing on his back legs as well. I love these products!

The results have been dramatic! The results have been dramatic!

Extra had "rain rot" on her back and legs. For a month, we used a couple of highly recommended products to help Extra's wounds heal. They all worked well except her "rain rot" persisted. I went back online and found several recommendations for Equiderma Horse Skin Lotion for "rain rot" and scratches. I started using it 3 weeks ago and the results have been dramatic! Hair is growing back and the wounds are healed. Extra's coat is remarkably soft and just glowing! What a difference from 3 weeks ago! I can not say enough about the Horse Skin Lotion! It is a definite must for "rain rot" and an extra boost to help heal all those scratches your horses somehow just get "horsing" around.
