Mane and tail rubbing and itching is a condition that all horse people encounter from time to time. Few things cause more frustration than seeing your horses beautiful tail turned into a chrysanthemum... More often than not it can be attributed to the culicoides fly. (sand gnat, midge, no-see um) Only the female of the species feed off your horse. These tiny insects burrow down into the mane and tail and wreak havoc while there. They are responsible for neck thread worm and also the intense itching that causes your horse to rub their manes or tails into a disastrous mess. This condition can also be caused by dirt and smegma build up on the dock of the tail, anus and genital area or parasites. It is often called to our attention when the horse backs up to whatever is available and begins rubbing. Without treatment the skin becomes bald, thickened, hard, and scaly.
In order to attack the problem from all angles thoroughly wash the entire tail head, anus and genital area with Equiderma Sheath, Udder & Genital Cleanser. On first treatment leave on for up to one hour. The Neem Oil, Arnica, Chamomile, Pine Bark & Cherry Bark will soothe the itch and reduce inflammation. Rinse well and apply Equiderma Skin Lotion to the entire dock. Apply Equiderma Skin Lotion daily, shampoo as often as needed to maintain clean skin during treatment.
