Mane and Tail Itching and Rubbing

EQUINE MANE AND TAIL ITCH DESCRIPTION:

mane and tail itching Mane and tail rubbing and itching is a condition that all horse people encounter from time to time.  Few things cause more frustration than seeing your horses beautiful tail turned into a chrysanthemum...  More often than not it can be attributed to the culicoides fly. (sand gnat, midge, no-see um) Only the female of the species feed off your horse.  These tiny insects burrow down into the mane and tail and wreak havoc while there.  They are responsible for neck thread worm and also the intense itching that causes your horse to rub their manes or tails into a disastrous mess.  This condition can also be caused by dirt and smegma build up on the dock of the tail, anus and genital area or parasites.  It is often called to our attention when the horse backs up to whatever is available and begins rubbing. Without treatment the skin becomes bald, thickened, hard, and scaly.
